Caricaturista editorial estadounidense. Publicó sus tiras cómicas por primera vez en el Chicago Daily News (1929). Luego trabajó para la Asociación de empresas de periódicos (1933–43) y el Washington Post (desde 1946). Durante sus 70 años de carrera, en su calidad de vocero líder del liberalismo, atacó las injusticias en la política, en las grandes empresas, en la industria, en el trabajo y en la economía. Es sobre todo conocido por sus caricaturas de la década de 1950, en las que atacaba al senador Joseph McCarthy. Ganó tres veces el Premio Pulitzer (1942, 1954, 1979), y recibió, en 1944, la Medalla presidencial de la libertad.
